Robinson recalled “I met this gentleman in North Charleston, South Carolina. He was pushing a shopping carriage full of aluminum cans with the intention of trading them in for money. He was large and imposing in stature, however gregarious and kind in nature. There was a light that radiated from him. This painting demonstrates the false reality stereotypes present.” The extraordinary canvas-like texture Robinson achieves is the result of labor-intensive cross-hatching that lends the composition an ethereal almost divine quality.
