Diogene Ulysee Napoleon Maillart studied at the École des Beaux-arts in the workshop of Léon Cogniet and won the Prix de Rome in 1864, at the age of 23. This composition relates closely to several paintings by Bouguereau, notably The Italian Girl at the Fountain (1869/18), Italian Girl Drawing Water (1871/13), in which he similarly posed an Italian model with a jug by a fountain or well.
