On his encounter with the model, Charles, Robinson recalled, "Mr. Charles Jones was tending [the] bar at one of my solo exhibitions at a gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. He held the gallery door open for me to enter. As I approached the entrance, I was struck by the stark white jacket of his uniform. He embodied the spirit of an angel, welcoming me into my first solo exhibition of watercolors."
