This impressive manuscript is closely related to a Mamluk Qur’an commissioned for the Mamluk Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the Keir collection, signed by Muhammad ibn Bilbek al-Muhsini (James 1988, p.224, no.12). Both share a distinctive feature of the surah headings written in gold outlined in black with the sin often sitting above a cluster of three dots. The large scale of this manuscript coupled with its close relation to the Keir collection manuscript makes it likely that this was also a royal Mamluk commission.

Further folios from this manuscript were offered in these rooms 23 May 1986, lot 279, and two single leaves were sold at Sotheby’s, Doha, 16 December 2010, lot 134.
