of rounded form with everted rim on a short foot, decorated in cobalt blue in an opacified tin glaze with a single-line Kufic inscription

baraka 'amal [Muhammad?]
'Blessing, the work of [Muhammad?]'
In his seminal work on early Islamic pottery, Arthur Lane praises the "candid simplicity" of early tin-glazed painted wares, comparing the absorption of the cobalt in the glaze to "ink on snow" (Lane 1947, p.13).
A similar bowl with an off-centred inscription is in the Genève collection part. I (see Genève 1981, p.21, fig.27).
