Description
of shallow rounded form, painted in underglaze cobalt blue, green and relief red outlined in black, decorated with sprays of tulips on a scale ground, the narrow rim with blue wavy zigzaging motif, alternating rosettes and berries to the underside, marked 'AMM 65'

The scale ground pattern was relatively widespread in Iznik ceramics, although employed using different styles and colours on various types of vessels.
A dish in the British Museum, London (inv. no.G.146), presents a similar floral composition on a blue and green scale ground. A jug in the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris (inv. no.AD27732) and a tankard in the Cincinnati Museum of Art are painted following the same decorative structure to the present dish, combining floral elements with zigzaging borders on a scaled ground. Similarly, a dish in the Musée national de la Renaissance, Ecouen (inv. no.ECL 8523) displays a band of zigzaging waves and a scaled ground strongly reminescent of the present piece.
