This impressive cooler is richly decorated with clusters of flowers and is emblazoned on each side with the family crest of Jan Albert Sichterman (1692-1794), a seated squirrel in iron red and gold.
Jan Albert Sichterman flew the Netherland after a duel in 1716 and joined the East India company. He set up a textile factory in the East, eventually producing fine fabrics that would bear his name Sichterman-gigans, a mix of cotton and silk, or Sichtermans zaaij, a yellow cotton. Several other pieces from this armorial service are now preserved in the Groninger Museum in Gronigen. Another cooler bearing his coat of arms, from the collection of Joan Oestreich Kend, sold in our New York rooms, 20th January 2017, lot 4117.
