Painted in 1933, this work is a canvas painted with gold leaf and oil. Beyond the very shiny aspect of the gold leaf, it is interesting to note that the painting of the motifs in the background came directly out of the tube: one might speak of "automatic painting".

Presented at auction for the first time in over thirty years, the work is accompanied by a silverprint autoportrait of Man Ray in front of the canvas. The canvas was painted just after the artist break-up with Lee Miller, as she blamed him for his possessive jealousy. The eroticism of the canvas recalls the passion experienced together.

Peinte en 1933, cette œuvre est une toile peinte à la feuille d'or et à l'huile. Au-delà du côté très brillant de la feuille d'or, il est intéressant de noter que la peinture des motifs à l'arrière-plan est directement sortie du tube: on peut parler de "peinture automatique".

Présentée en vente pour la première fois depuis plus de trente ans, l'œuvre est accompagnée d'un autoportrait argentique de Man Ray devant la toile. La toile est peinte juste après la rupture avec Lee Miller, elle lui reprochant sa jalousie possessive. L'érotisme de la toile rappelle la passion vécue en ensemble.
