Influenced by his encounter with Suzanne, soon to become his second wife, Metzinger introduces in his compositions elements from Greek art and mythology as exemplified in this painting representing the goddess of the sea and wife of Poséidon, Amphitrite. This composition is the small version of a painting (apart from a few minor details) that was part of the art dealer Léonce Rosenberg's collection.
