Description

They Might Be Giants

Costume sketches by Edith Head

circa 1969

Series of 15 pencil sketches with color and mounted woolen or tweed fabric samples for Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Mildred Watson, various sizes, some mounted on card. A typed note on letterhead note paper (“Edith Head Designing”) to Tony Harvey gives further instructions on the colors to be used when designing the 1971 film’s costumes, “As we discussed, since Holmes is in the brown and warm range, Watson should be in the gray or green color tones. EH 11/6/1969”

Edith Head won eight Academy Awards for costume design, capping off a truly legendary and influential career by wining an Oscar for The Sting. She dressed such luminaries as Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly. They Might be Giants starred Woodward and George C Scott in a modern take on the famed detective duo, playing up the romantic angle with a touch psychic paranoia from Holmes and Watson being his therapist.
