Description

George H. W. Bush

Issuing a "Pardon" to Paul Newman

Typed letter signed with autograph postscript ("George Bush | P.S. Jerry Weintraub makes a good post-man") to Paul Newman, one page (234 x 159 mm) on salmon-colored Camp David | The President letterhead, 12 December 1992, headed at upper margin, "(self-typed)."

President Bush issues a joking "pardon" to Paul Newman, evidently relating to some misunderstanding at the 1992 Kennedy Center Honors: A Celebration of the Performing Arts, at which Newman and Woodward were recognized for lifetime achievement, together with Ginger Rogers, Lionel Hampton, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Paul Taylor. "All's well, fear not. Pardon Granted!! It was a pleasure seeing you again. (not trying to rub it in—honest!) I hope both you and Joanne felt the warmth of the welcome you were given there at the Kennedy Center; and further I hope you both know you were most welcome at the White House. Merry Christmas." Bush evidently used Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub to courier the letter to Newman.
