The present work shows the influence of Frank's time in Paris, where he and his wife Mimi lived from 1926 to 1929. The French capital and its vibrant artistic scene left a lasting impression on Frank, and fundamentally changed his artistic outlook.
It was in Paris that Frank first enjoyed international success, with the Bernheim Jeune gallery staging a one-man show of his works in 1927-28. Frank's vivid and rhythmic use of colour in the present work clearly shows the influence of the Ecole de Paris, notably of Matisse, Soutine, Bonnard, and Chagall.
