Nymph and Triton

signed: A. Carrier Belleuse.

terracotta, on an ebonised wood base

63.5cm., 25in. overall

A variant of the present group depicting a Nymph and Satyr is illustrated by Hargrove and Grandjean (op. cit., 2014, pp. 235-6), which shows that Carrier-Belleuse adapted this theme which alludes to renaissance and baroque compositions including Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Woman or Bernini's Rape of Prosperpine. Another example of the Nymph and Triton was sold in these rooms (Sotheby's London, lot 163, 19 April 2000).
