Venus and Cupid
white marble
66 by 134 by 62cm., 26 by 52¾ by 24⅜in.
This monumental marble of a reclining Venus and Cupid is a fine example of the subject which has proved to inspire artists throughout Europe since antiquity. Equally monumental examples have been carved by various well-known 19th century Italian sculptors, including Pietro Tenerani whose reclining Venus and Cupid is now in Chatsworth House, England, or by Pompeo Marchesi, whose marble Venus and Cupid is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. no. 6146). The present example beautifully captures the maternal relationship of Venus towards her son Cupid, who lays comfortably against her lower abdomen.
