Hercules and Omphale
signed: A. CARRiER
terracotta, on an ebonised wood base
terracotta: 78cm., 30 3/4 in.
base: 11cm., 4 3/8 in.
The modelling of the present terracotta is exceptional, especially in the figure of the reclining Hercules who recalls Michelangelo's Night and Day from the Medici New Sacristy tombs at San Lorenzo in Florence. The sketchy quality of the modelling and the expressive physiognomy recall works by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), who trained with Carrier-Belleuse in Brussels.
