Bust of Faith
white marble, on a modern stone socle
71cm., 28in. overall
The present bust is carved after Hiram Powers' allegorical bust of Faith, which was originally commissioned together with busts of Charity and Hope by Marshall Woods (1855-1899), a prominent investor and director of the Providence National Bank from Rhode Island, in 1866-67. The plaster version of the present model is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington (inv. no. 1968.155.22). Ingrid Roscoe records that approximately 20 versions have been produced by the artist, including several for British patrons (op. cit.).
