Apollo

signed: P. Romanelli

white marble

67cm., 26½in.

The Florentine sculptor Pasquale Romanelli achieved an international reputation for his finely carved mythological and biblical marble figures. Romanelli began his training at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence under Luigi Pampaloni but was soon taught by the foremost Tuscan neoclassical sculptor, Lorenzo Bartolini. He later collaborated with Bartolini and was the successor of his studio after his passing in 1850. The sculptor’s liberal interpretation of the neoclassical style gives his Apollo a subtle sensuality and softness. Apollo is depicted seated with his main attribute, the lyre.
