Description

North West Frontier--Samuel Bourne, Charles Shepherd and others

Album of photographs, c. 1860s-90s

Folio (285 x 252mm.), 51 photographs (50 albumen prints, one matt silver print), various sizes (from approximately 94 x 59mm. to 274 x 208mm.), mostly mounted on card, recto and verso, with manuscript or typed captions, some loosely inserted (including 12 photographs in postmarked envelope), watercolour illustration, view of 'The Black Mountain, from Machai Peak, looking N[orth]', newspaper clipping about 'grave stones in the Black Mountain', some staining, occasional foxing and spotting, slight silver mirroring to matt silver print photograph

This album was compiled in the 1890s, since manuscript captions on the card mounts of some photographs cross-reference Edward Emmerson Oliver's Across the Border (London, 1890), although the album also includes photographs taken earlier, for instance Charles Shepherd's image of Afridis at Jamrūd Fort (1866). Six of the photographs in the album include typed captions from Bourne & Shepherd's The Tribes on Our Frontier (1890s).
