Amrut Patel was born in 1947 in Ahmedabad. He completed his degree in painting from the city's C. N. College of Fine Art in 1968. He later expanded his techniques through learning the fresco and mural painting traditions of Rajasthan and working at the Weavers' Service Centre in the Government of India's Ministry of Textiles.

Like his uncle, fellow painter Balkrishna Patel (lot 8), Amrut deploys expert colouration and simple geometric forms in his artistic practice to shape complex abstract works. The current lot is marked by its compositional balance and meditative quality.

Amrut Patel has received numerous artistic awards throughout his career including the National Award of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1976) and the Sahitya Kala Parishad award, New Delhi (1980 and 1986).
