A Yamato katana 

Attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo

Nanbokucho - Muromachi period, late 14th century - early 15th century


Sugata [configuration]: Shinogi-zukuri, deep tori-zorio-kissaki

Kitae [forging pattern]: Fine itame hada with pronounced grain, jinie attached and with chikei, masame and itame hada mixed to the shinogi 

Hamon [tempering pattern]: Suguha hamon in niedeki with small ashi

Boshi [tip]: Yakizume boshi

Horimono [carvings]: Futatsu-hi to both sides of the blade 

Nakago [tang]: O-suriagemumei, three mekugi-ana

Habaki [collar]: Silver, single clad

In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]

Koshirae [mount]: Of later date, polished black lacquer saya [scabbard], the associated mounts in shakudo on a nanako ground with gilt dragons in high relief, the tsuba with a gold dragon writhing around the rim, the kozuka and kogai with high relief dragons on a gilt nanako ground, gilt dragon menuki


Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 67.5 cm., 26⅝ in. 

Sori [curvature]: 1.7 cm., ¾ in.

Saki-haba [width at the yokote]:  2.8 cm., 1⅛ in.

Moto-haba [width at the machi]: 3 cm., 1¼ in.


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Hozon Token [Sword Especially Worthy of Preservation], no. 1003281 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Heisei 27 (2015).
