A Saotome school hoshi-bachi [helmet with standing rivets] 

Momoyama period, late 16th century 


the sixty-two plate russet iron bowl with small standing rivets, terminating in a five-stage copper-gilt and shakudo tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, the sabiji-nuri [simulated russet iron] lacquered mabisashi [peak] with hammered brow, black lacquer fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with applied copper-gilt namiwa mon [circle of waves crests], the copper-gilt fukurin [ornamental border] chased and engraved with foliate scrolls, four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in purple braid


The bowl to peak: 28 cm., 11 in. 

The shikoro to peak: 32.5 cm., 12¾ in.
