Unframed: 54.5 by 84cm., 21½ by 33in.

Framed: 85 by 115cm., 33½ by 45¼in.

The present work centers on a carpet seller in Tlemcen, Algeria. Simoni took great care to realize the composition, first sketching elements in graphite before adding final touches in watercolor with meticulous attention to detail.

Born in Rome, Simoni studied painting at the Accademia di San Luca for five years beginning in 1861 and was one of the first members of the Società degli Acquarellisti. Simoni first visited Algeria between 1877 and 1879 and made numerous trips to North Africa throughout his career, producing paintings and watercolors of markets, mosques, and various festivities observed from life.
