Property from a Distinguished American Collection (Lots 1-21)
1854 - 1932
signed, inscribed and dated Paris R. Ernst 1882 lower right
oil on canvas
Unframed: 45 by 35cm., 17¾ by 13¾in.
Framed: 75 by 65.4cm., 29½ by 25¾in.
The canvas has been lined and is providing a strong and stable support to the paint surface. There is an area of craqeulure to the lower part of the turban (below, to the left and above the figure's ear). There is also some very minor paint separation to his shoulder and chin, visible upon closer inspection. There is some minor surface dirt, otherwise the work is in good condition, ready to hang. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals an uneven and opaque varnish layer. There is minimal retouching - a few lines of infilling to craquelure above the ear and a minor spot to the figure's neck.
