FIRST EDITION, large 8vo (265 x 172mm.), half-title, 50 chromolithographed plates, finished by hand (plate 14 bound in as frontispiece), numerous in-text woodcut illustrations, original red cloth, spine with raised bands in five compartments, second gilt lettered, others with a repeat decoration in gilt, gilt edges, silk endpapers, light spotting and browning


First edition of an important contribution to the literature on orchids.


This work is devoted to the orchids then in cultivation in Europe, richly illustrated with colored plates and accompanied by a history and guide to the plants. The plates, by an artist named M. Leroy, are justly described as "beautifully done" (Orchid Observed).
