Description

A Bezalel Silver-Mounted Marble Nine-Light Candelabrum, Jerusalem, circa 1920

with rose marble stem and base, the etched silver mounts with stone cabochons, topped by three arms each with triple sconces applied with filigree

Height 13½in. (34.2 cm)

The Hebrew inscription on the base reads, “I shall be tender to your stones and kiss them, and the taste of your soil shall be sweeter to me than honey (Rabbi Judah Halevi).” The quotation as inscribed here is a slight variation on the final lines of Halevi’s Yefeh Nof Mesos Tevel, which expresses the poet’s intense longing for the Land of Israel.
