This is the result of a tiny yield of 12 hl/hectare. In 2018, a very generous friend treated us to this and it was astounding, utterly stupendous in every way. Talk about Latour impact! The deep colour led to an accompanying bouquet of blackcurrant, showing massive all-round health, cedarwood and Pauillac Cabernet. Amazing, monumental wine - on this evidence, is this vinous perfection? No volatility, soft power and mouth-coating fruit and class - it just swells on the palate and stays flawless until the decanter is finished. Class in the glass, persistence, dark chocolate and a certain voluptuous meatiness. One could never get enough of this wine and it stays imprinted on the sensual memory. In 2020, for a celebration, in spite of extraneous circumstances this year. Phenomenal colour, and then a deep cassis nose, so pure, with totally dominant fruit and no perceptible volatile acidity, which is amazing for a 1945 on its 75th birthday. It bursts with compact, explosive fruit and sheer purity on the palate, plus the richness and opulence of a very 'grand vin'. A bilberry finish, coating the mouth and the tannins, leaving one with the velvety concentration of such a small yield. There is a God! In 2022, the almost extraterrestrial force, beauty and majesty, plus total black fruit spice, are all witness to another age, perhaps never to be repeated. Powerful and haunting, liquorice and black cherries. (Original cork, family cellar, huge sediment - does this tell you something about wines of this epoch?) Serena Sutcliffe, MW
