The following condition report is kindly provided by Simon Parkes. This work is restored and could be hung in its current condition. The canvas has an old European lining, which is nicely stabilizing the paint layer. There are no signs of abrasion to the paint layer. All of the subtle details within the face, figure, and hands are extremely well preserved. Some cracking has developed during drying, which often happens with works by this artist. Although these cracks are not raised, they do separate, revealing a lighter color beneath. While these cracks cannot be seen within the figure, they can be found in most of the areas surrounding the figure. The retouches addressing these cracks are extremely sloppy and broad, and give the impression, at least when the work is viewed under ultraviolet light, that the condition is severely compromised. In fact, these cracks are a fairly common occurrence and could b restored in a considerably more accurate and economical fashion. The work could be hung as is. However, it is strongly recommended that the retouches be removed and replaced more accurately.
