Dressing for the Festival

signed V. Volpe (lower right)

oil on canvas

canvas: 16½ by 24½ in.; 41.9 by 62.2 cm

framed: 27½ by 35⅜ in.; 70 by 90 cm

The canvas is not lined. The paint surface is stable and in good condition despite some small areas of paint loss at bottom center and on the wall at right between the figures, with a corresponding repair on the verso. Under UV light, figures were selectively cleaned; scattered small areas of retouching in the framed painting hanging at left, across the walls, particularly in the upper and rightmost areas, in the pants and shoes of the male figure, and in the seated female figure's black robes, in the background to the left of the Christ child, and by the barrel in the lower left corner; varnish fluoresces green.
