A wakan-nari kabuto [crown-shaped helmet]

Edo period, 18th century


the black lacquered bowl of wakan-nari [crown-shaped] form with tall protruding apex, stenciled doeskin peak, the turnbacks similarly decorated and applied with mokko crests (mon), two-tiered black lacquered rounded neck guard (manju-jikoro) with close-spaced lacing (kebiki odoshi) in green braid, the black lacquered forecrest (maedate) in the form of a shikami, inlaid glass eyes, gilt wood lateral crests (wakidate) in the form of falcon feathers, the black lacquered iron face mask with fierce expression (ressei mempo), open mouth and wrinkled face, detachable nose plate, yak hair moustache, silver lacquer teeth, red lacquer interior, three-tiered throat protector with close-spaced lacing in pale green braid, accompanied with a plain wood stand as illustrated
