the sixty-two-plate russet iron bowl of goshozan form with small standing rivets, terminating in a copper and copper-gilt five-stage tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, russet iron peak, the large turnbacks with Dutch style embossed leather depicting scrolling foliage and applied with shakudo Nine Luminaries crests (kuyo mon), possibly later, black lacquered slightly rounded neck guard (ko-manju jikoro) with close-spaced lacing in blue braid and stenciled leather edging, the russet iron face mask with fierce expression (ressei mempo) with slightly wrinkled face and open mouth, detachable nose plate, standing flanges (yadome) to the cheeks, horse hair moustache, silver lacquer teeth, red lacquer interior, four-tiered throat protector with close-spaced lacing in blue braid, accompanied with a plain wood stand as illustrated


The helmet when mounted on a stand: 45.6 cm., 18 in. high (including fittings)

The peak with slight surface rust which can easily be cleaned, the neck guard has a few minor lacquer losses to the lamellae, slight fading and wear to the blue lacing, the underside of the neck guard with some cracking to the lacquer and some small areas of lacquer re-touching to the underside, as can be seen in the illustration there are some small areas of lacquer loss to the maedate, and overall slight cracking consistent with age and use, the mask has some surface rust, some old wear to the braid and to the hemp cord consistent with age and use.
