A koboshi kabuto [helmet with small standing rivets] and mempo [face mask]

The helmet signed Munetsugu saku (made by Munetsugu)

Edo period, 17th - 18th century


the sixty-two-plate russet iron bowl of goshozan form with small standing rivets, terminating in a copper and copper-gilt five-stage tehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, russet iron peak, the large turnbacks with Dutch style embossed leather depicting scrolling foliage and applied with shakudo Nine Luminaries crests (kuyo mon), possibly later, black lacquered slightly rounded neck guard (ko-manju jikoro) with close-spaced lacing in blue braid and stenciled leather edging, the russet iron face mask with fierce expression (ressei mempo) with slightly wrinkled face and open mouth, detachable nose plate, standing flanges (yadome) to the cheeks, horse hair moustache, silver lacquer teeth, red lacquer interior, four-tiered throat protector with close-spaced lacing in blue braid, accompanied with a plain wood stand as illustrated


The helmet when mounted on a stand: 45.6 cm., 18 in. high (including fittings)
