Gasper Peeter Verbruggen le Jeune

Anvers 1664 - 1730

Bouquet de fleurs dans un vase

Huile sur toile

47,3 x 39,4 cm ; 18 ⅝ by 15 ½ in.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer who confirmed the authentication of this work, based on photographs. He dates it to circa 1696.

Son of Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen the Elder, the eponymous artist of the present painting was born in Antwerp in 1664, and seems to have worked there between about 1687 and 1705. He appears to have been a lover of leisure and luxury, and fled Amsterdam and then The Hague to escape his debts. Many works produced in collaboration with Mattheus Terwesten are recorded during this time, but in 1723 he returned to Antwerp.

Typical of the artist’s work, this opulent bouquet allowed him to display all his mastery of textures and floral colours. The red carnation facing downwards, offering the painter the opportunity to describe all the nuances of its veins, makes a notable reappearance in the painting sold at auction in New York in 2017 (sale Sotheby’s New York, 27 January 2017, lot 425, sold for $ 40,000)1.

The present painting, which is of very fine quality, is suffused with all the delicacy and subtlety of the artist’s brush.
