Alberto Carlieri

While we still know little about the life and work of Alberto Carlieri, a long and rich article by David R. Marshall in 2004 revealed a corpus of important works, which have long been mistakenly attributed to many other artists, from Panini to Niccolo Codazzi, from Giovanni Boulanger to Giovanni Ghisolfi (‘The Architectural Piece in 1700: The Paintings of Alberto Carlieri (1672 – c. 1720), Pupil of Andrea Pozzo’, Artibus et Historiae, Vol. 25, no. 50 (2004), p. 39–126).

Possibly French by birth and active in the early eighteenth century, Alberto Carlieri is mentioned by Orlandi in the 1719 edition of his Abecedario Pittorico, where he is described as a pupil of Giuseppe Marchi and the eminent Andrea Pozzo, who passed on to him their understanding of quadratura and the painting of architecture.

L’arrivée de saint Paul à Lystre is a work that is completely characteristic of the painter, in terms of both the composition and the execution. Many of the figures in the present painting reappear almost identically in other works by him.

Peut-être d’origine français, actif au début du XVIII^è siècle, Alberto Carlieri est cité par Orlandi dans l’édition de 1719 de son Abecedario Pittorico, et décrit par ce dernier comme l’élève de Giuseppe Marchi et du célèbre Andrea Pozzo, qui lui ont transmis leur connaissance de la quadrattura et de la peinture d’architecture.

L’arrivée de saint Paul à Lystre est une œuvre tout-à-fait caractéristique du peintre, aussi bien sur le plan de la composition que de celui de l’exécution. Un grand nombre de figures du présent tableau se retrouvent dans d’autres de ses œuvres, presque littéralement reprises.
