Born in 1787 in The Hague, Schelfhout began an apprenticeship with his father as a picture framer, but soon turned to painting, particularly favouring landscape painting. Working ceaselessly, he travelled throughout the Low Countries and as far as Germany, producing many views of his homeland. These days, his winter landscapes are undoubtedly the most widely known, but his talent shone through equally in his summer views, as in the present painting. 

The poetry of a summer evening is here given remarkable expression in a work whose small size reinforces the impression of peace and intimacy. The warm palette of the sky and the pink clouds reflected in the calm water creates a strong contrast with the mill – emblem of the artist’s country of birth – depicted against the light. Schelfhout made watercolour sketches in the open air and then worked on his paintings in the studio; the treatment of the present example, with its vibrant, juxtaposed brushstrokes, wonderfully conveys the impression of a moment caught in time. This proved an inspiration to the Impressionists, and especially to one of his pupils, Johann Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891).

Né en 1787 à La Haye, Schelfhout commence son apprentissage d’encadreur auprès de son père, mais se consacre rapidement à la peinture, et notamment à celle de paysages. Travaillant sans relâche, il voyage à travers tous les Pays-Bas jusqu’en Allemagne, et réalise de nombreuses vues de son pays. Si les paysages hivernaux sont sans doute aujourd’hui les plus connus, son talent s’exprime tout autant dans ses vues estivales, comme dans notre présent tableau.

La poésie d’un soir d’été est ici remarquablement exprimée dans une œuvre dont le petit format renforce l’impression de calme et d’intimité. La palette chaude du ciel et des nuages roses se reflétant dans une eau paisible, contraste fortement avec le moulin, emblème du pays natal de l’artiste, vu à contre-jour. Réalisant des esquisses à l’aquarelle en extérieur, Schelfhout exécute ensuite ses peintures dans son atelier ; le traitement de l’œuvre, en vibrants coups de pinceaux juxtaposés, transmet à merveille cette impression d’un moment pris sur le vif, qui inspira les impressionnistes, et notamment l’un de ses élèves, Johann Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891)…
