Camille Joseph Etienne Roqueplan

This stagecoach, about to tumble into the sea, gives Camille Roqueplan an opportunity to deploy all his talent as a landscape painter and illustrator. Far removed from works by his masters Abel de Pujol (1785–1861) and Antoine-Jean, Baron Gros (1771–1835), this fine painting in excellent condition was almost certainly painted in about 1839. In fact, a drawing of the same subject by Roqueplan, with a very similar composition, is signed and dated 1839. This drawing was restituted by the Musée du Louvre on 13 May 2022 to the descendants of Armand Dorville, who had owned it until 1942.

A model of the genre for the quality of its execution and its dynamic composition, this handsome painting must have been popular because the artist painted at least two versions of the composition. There is another in the Musée des Beaux Arts in Toulon (inv. 895.7.28).

Cette diligence sur le point de basculer dans la mer permet à Camille Roqueplan de mettre en œuvre tout son talent de paysagiste et d'illustrateur. Eloigné des œuvres de ses maîtres Abel de Pujol (1785-1861) et Antoine-Jean, baron Gros (1771-1835) ce beau tableau en excellent état de conservation a sûrement été peint vers 1839. En effet, un dessin de même sujet de Roqueplan avec une composition très proche est signé et daté 1839. Ce dessin a d'ailleurs été restitué le 13 mai 2022 par le Louvre aux descendants d'Armand Dorville à qui il appartenait jusqu'en 1942.

Modèle en son genre par sa qualité d'exécution et le dynamisme de sa composition, ce beau tableau a sûrement beaucoup plu puisque le peintre a peint au moins deux versions de cette composition. En effet, il en existe une autre au musée des beaux arts de Toulon (inv. 895.7.28)
