Arnold Boonen

Unpublished and in good condition, this fine portrait of a young gentleman, now for the first time on the market, is an exciting discovery and a notable addition to the œuvre of Arnold Boonen. Although it bears a signature and a date “Godfr. Schalken 168(?)”, which were added at a later date, this painting is in fact characteristic of the meticulously and exquisitely rendered portraiture with which the artist – the most gifted pupil of Schalcken and the last great representative of the seventeenth century Fijnschilders – perpetuated the legacy of his master.

The work may be compared to the many portraits of children, young men and women that the artist painted in the 1680s and 1700s, in which he carefully imagined or precisely described a specific real or mythological setting. In the present composition – one of the most original of this type that the artist painted – the young boy, who fixes the viewer with an assured gaze, holds in his left hand the reins of a horse that can be seen in the background, no doubt signifying his passion for riding.

 Inédit et en bel état de préservation, ce beau portrait d’un jeune gentilhomme, qui apparaît ici pour la première fois sur le marché, est une découverte passionnante et un ajout notable à l'œuvre d’Arnold Boonen. En dépit de l’inscription et de la date “Godfr. Schalken 168(?)”, ajoutées postérieurement, il est caractéristique de cet art du portrait au rendu méticuleux et précieux, dans lequel le peintre, le plus doué des élèves de Schalcken et le dernier grand représentant des Fijnschilders du XVII^e siècle, perpétue l'héritage de son professeur.

L’œuvre est à rapprocher de nombreux portraits d’enfants ou de jeunes garçons ou jeunes filles exécutés par l’artiste dans les décennies 1680-1700, dans lesquels le peintre prend soin d’imaginer ou de définir avec précision un environnement particulier, réel ou mythologique. Dans la composition ici présente – l’une des plus originales de ce type exécutées par l’artiste – le jeune homme, qui dévisage le spectateur avec une assurance certaine, tient dans sa main gauche les rênes d’un cheval que l’on voit au second plan, symbole sans doute de sa passion pour l’équitation.
