This portrait, of remarkable quality, is an exact copy of one by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, painted in 1782, exhibited at the 1783 Salon, and given in 1815 by the Comte de Provence (later to become Louis XVIII) to the Marquis de Crux (private collection).

As in the case of the famous portrait of Marie-Antoinette which Vigée Le Brun painted in the same year and which attracted so much attention at the Salon, the artist has chosen to portray the princess relatively simply, in a ‘chemise’ rather than in elaborate state costume.

Born into the House of Savoy in Turin in 1753, Marie-Joséphine of Savoy was married in 1771 to Louis-Stanislas-Xavier, Comte de Provence and the future Louis XVIII. Exiled in 1791, she died in England in 1810, before her husband rose to the throne of France.

D’une qualité remarquable, ce portrait reprend exactement celui d’Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, exécuté en 1782, exposé au Salon de 1783, et offert en 1815 par le comte de Provence (devenu depuis Louis XVIII) au marquis de Crux (collection particulière).

Comme pour le célèbre portrait de Marie-Antoinette peint la même année par Vigée Le Brun et qui fit tant de bruit au Salon, l’artiste a choisi de représenter la princesse avec une relative simplicité, en « chemise », et non en grande tenue d’apparat.

Née à Turin en 1753, issue de maison de Savoie, Marie-Joséphine de Savoie fut mariée en 1771 à Louis-Stanislas-Xavier, comte de Provence et futur Louis XVIII. Exilée en 1791, elle décèdera en Angleterre en 1810, avant que celui-ci n’accède au trône de France…
