oil on panel

unframed: 76.5 x 60 cm.; 30 1/8 x 23 5/8 in.

framed: 87.3 x 71 cm.; 34 3/8 x 28 in.

The panel is uncradled and slightly bowed, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is uneven and discoloured. There are three vertical infilled repairs along the top left margin where the panel has split, the longest measuring approx. 6cm. The panel also has a vertical split from the top right margin measuring approx. 4cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the above and further reveals retouchings around the repaired areas. It also reveals the uneven varnish and various campaigns of retouchings in the blacks of the sitters dress and along his hairline. The painting is in overall fair condition.
