Brian Byun draws on the environment and influences of his childhood in his work. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, and now a naturalized citizen of the United States, Byun melds personal and national symbols representative of South Korean and American culture in richly toned abstract paintings that evoke the duality of his lived identity. A range of objects including forms found in traditional Korean ceramics, animals, and the everyday objects of life become points of departure, which Byun then develops into an abstract and deeply personal geometric vocabulary of forms that occur and recur throughout his works.

Exhibitions of Byun’s work have been held at 205 Hudson st, New York; Kenektid Gallery, New York; and Co-Prosperity Sphere, Chicago among others.
