La moglie d'andrea (The Wife of Andrea)

signed and indistinctly dated SIMEON / SOLOMON / 1895 lower right and titled lower edge

watercolour

Framed: 58 by 44cm., 23 by 17½in.

Like his friends Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, Solomon was greatly inspired by artists of the Italian Renaissance. The present watercolour, which is stylistically close to the work of Rossetti and Burne-Jones of the 1860s, is an imaginary portrait of the wife of one of their artistic heroes Andrea Mantegna. Mantegna’s wife was Nicolosia Bellini who he married in 1453 at the request of her father Jacopo.
