"Duntreath Castle was extensively remodelled in 1890 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, for its owner, Sir Archibald Edmonstone. The music room, one of the principal rooms on the first floor of the house, was photographed in 1898 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The room, decorated in a French style with lots of gilding and elaborate plasterwork, was in the female domain of the house. It is elegantly furnished, with minimum clutter, but rather dominated by a giant potted fern on an enormous plant stand (right) [offered as this lot]. Sydney Mitchell reconstructed the castle on the lines of Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, with a great circuit of reception rooms on the first floor. The style of decoration changes from room to room."
