Aristide Bruant was a successful singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who ran the Montmartre cabaret, Le Mirliton, where he was renowned for creating a sensation by abusing his audience. He showed an early interest in Lautrec’s work and commissioned more posters from the artist than anyone else - four in total. In this poster, his third, Lautrec emphasizes his subject’s personal and professional bravado through both the entertainer’s trademark costume of a wide-brimmed hat, cape, and red scarf, and a bold use of Japanese graphic elements, including flat fields of color and a calligraphic line.
