In-8 (178 x 94 mm). Maroquin vieux rose, encadrement de multiples filets dorés, décor central de maroquin vert décoré d'une fleur stylisée et mosaïquée, dos lisse orné, doublure et gardes de moire jaune paille (Johanna Birkenruth, London). Emboîtage moderne.

Jolie édition américaine (Maine) publiée par Thomas B. Mosher, de la première des "tragédies grecques" écrites en anglais.


Tirage à 925 exemplaires sur papier Van Gelder.


La relieuse Johanna Birkenruth (1853-1929) fut proche de la Guild of Women Binders et de la mouvance Arts & Crafts de William Morris. L'une de ses reliures, exposée à la Arts & Crafts Exhibition de 1897, inspira Frank Karslake pour fonder la Guild of Women Binders l'année suivante. Ses reliures exploitent les techniques traditionnelles comme la broderie ou l’incrustation de pierres. Son atelier fut l'un des plus originaux de la fin du XIXe siècle en Angleterre.


Un article de l'époque consacré aux "Modern Bookbindings and Their Designers" distingue cette reliure de Birkenruth, "whose binding of Atalanta in Calydon is quite original, and pleasant both to sight and touch" (E. Wood, p. 45).
