Deborah Bell’s work is majorly influenced by mystic interpretation and her own personal spiritual reflections which is communicated in the imagery of Do You Remember Where We Came From? II. She is inspired by ancient civilisations and draws inspiration from the historical roots of humankind. In Bell’s work, the dream-like state of the central figure is depicted in the use of gold tones highlighted against black and grey undertones. Bell has also shared collaborations with renowned contemporary South African artists, Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge. Her work has been acquired by MoMA in New York, the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the South African National Gallery in Cape Town.
