This fine and unusual portrait of a child, wearing a distinctive feathered hat and surrounded by large leaves, appears to have been inspired by the paintings of artists working during the first half of the 17th century in the fijnschilder tradition, such as Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris. A number of artists perpetuated this style, even into the first decades of the 18th century, including Godefridus Schalcken and Eglon van der Neer, to whom this painting was previously attributed.
We are grateful to Eddy Schavemaker for proposing an attribution to Hendrik Jacob Hoet, on the basis of comparison with the signed portrait in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen (inv. no. GK 201).1 And are also grateful to Dr Anja Sevcik, who notes similarities with the work of Thomas van der Wilt, and Dr Fred G. Meijer, who compares the vegetation in the foreground to that found in paintings by Abraham Begeyn.2
