Charles Collins, whom Waterhouse described as of 'considerable competence', specialised in painting dogs, exotic birds and dead game. Although this painting is consistent with Collins's work, particularly in the colouring, handling and attention given to the birds, it is unusual in featuring a prominent flower and plant still life. Similar poppies are depicted in two canvases by the artist that have appeared on the art market in recent years.1
