Where purchased by the present owner.

The composition of this painting, which might be described as a studiolo (or cabinet) painting, derives from a work given to the mannerist painter Giovanni Battista Naldini (1537–1591) in the Museo Francesco Borgogna, Vercelli.1 Another work of the same composition, by the Florentine artist Giovanni Balducci (c. 1560–1631), was offered at Sotheby's, New York, in 2014.2 Compared to Balducci's painting, this picture contains fewer figures gathered together in a more energtic composition.
