The composition of this painting, which might be described as a studiolo (or cabinet) painting, derives from a work given to the mannerist painter Giovanni Battista Naldini (1537–1591) in the Museo Francesco Borgogna, Vercelli.¹ Another work of the same composition, by the Florentine artist Giovanni Balducci (c. 1560–1631), was offered at Sotheby's, New York, in 2014.² Compared to Balducci's painting, this picture contains fewer figures gathered together in a more energtic composition.
