German or Italian, late 16th/ 17th century

This charming bucolic cameo of a cock is similar to late 16th and 17th-century glyptics with animal imagery in the Museo degli Argenti at Palazzo Pitti. A strikingly similar cameo in the Pitti (inv. no. 186) also representing a cockerel has been described as German, first half 17th-century, and is illustrated in R. Gennaioli, Le gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti: Cammei e Intagli nelle collezioni di Palazzo Pitti, Florence, 2007, p. 348, no. 465.
