The present work is preliminary for a drawing of the same subject and composition in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.1 Sumowski compares the Strauss drawing in manner to a sheet depicting Hagar in the Desert,2 previously in the Valentiner collection, and dates both works to the mid-1650s.
