This large and characteristic drawing is a fine example of Cavedone's oil sketch technique. As discussed by Giles, Negro and Roio (see Literature) the present composition relates closely to two other oil sketches by the artist housed, respectively, in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan and The Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.1 All three works are dated by Giles and Negro to circa 1618-20 and were clearly influenced by Cavedone's altarpiece of The Madonna and Child with Saints Alò and Petronius, for the Chapel of the Campagnia dei Fabri, which dates to 1614.
