Description
Giacomo Cavedone
Sassuolo 1577 - 1660 Bologna
The Madonna and Child with Saints Petronius and Alò
Black chalk and oil on paper;
bears old attribution and dating in black chalk, lower centre: An Caracci - 1589
433 by 295 mm; 17 by 11⅝ in.
This large and characteristic drawing is a fine example of Cavedone's oil sketch technique. As discussed by Giles, Negro and Roio (see Literature) the present composition relates closely to two other oil sketches by the artist housed, respectively, in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan and The Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.1 All three works are dated by Giles and Negro to circa 1618-20 and were clearly influenced by Cavedone's altarpiece of The Madonna and Child with Saints Alò and Petronius, for the Chapel of the Campagnia dei Fabri, which dates to 1614.
1. Negro and Roio, op. cit., cat. nos. 394A and 397A
