Portrait of an artist, possibly a self-portrait

Black, red and white chalk and stumping, within black ink framing lines, on buff paper

382 by 277 mm; 15 by 10⅞in.

This large and appealing drawing, very possibly the self-portrait of its maker, must be the work of a draughtsman in the orbit of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, such as Claude-Jean-Baptiste Hoin (1750–1817).  The technically sophisticated combination of chalk and stumping also to some extent anticipates the style of Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845).
